However, his major breakthrough came when he was cast as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan in the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy. His portrayal of the charming and confident plastic surgeon quickly made him a fan favorite, earning him global recognition and solidifying his place in television history.

In October 2012, Dane joined the main cast of the action-packed drama The Last Ship, produced by filmmaker Michael Bay.
