Aníkúlápó Season 2: The Ghoul Awakens – Kunle Afolayan Expands His Supernatural Epic

Kunle Afolayan is back with the highly anticipated second season of Aníkúlápó, and from the newly released trailer, it’s clear the stakes have never been higher. Titled Aníkúlápó Season 2: The Ghoul Awakens, the series is set to premiere on January 30, following a teaser shared by Afolayan on Instagram on January 4 and the full trailer release on January 19.

Building on the rich universe first introduced in the 2022 Netflix film Aníkúlápó and later expanded in the 2024 series Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Spectre, Season 2 promises a deeper exploration of power, destiny, and the supernatural. This new chapter doesn’t just continue the story, it broadens it, both in scale and ambition.

A Return of Familiar Faces and Powerful New Additions

Season 2 reunites audiences with a strong ensemble cast that includes Sola Sobowale, Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Oyindamola Sanni, Aisha Lawal, Moji Afolayan, Eyiyemi Afolayan, Ronke Oshodi-Oke, Taiwo Hassan, and Lateef Adedimeji. Their return ensures continuity while deepening the emotional and political complexities of the story.

Adding fresh energy to the series are new cast members such as Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori (Kiekie), Teniola Aladese, Antar Laniyan, Joke Muyiwa, Saidi Balogun, Adeoluwa Okusaga (Saga), and Tayo Faniran. These additions hint at new alliances, rivalries, and conflicts that will push the narrative into uncharted territory.

A Story That Crosses Borders

Unlike Season 1, which was largely set at Kunle Afolayan’s Film Village in Igbojaye, Oyo State, Season 2 expands beyond Nigeria into Cape Coast, Ghana. This shift reflects a collaboration between KAP Motion Pictures and Ghana’s National Film Authority, signalling a more ambitious, transnational storyline. The new setting opens the door to broader political and cultural interactions, giving the Aníkúlápó universe a richer historical and geographical context.

The Ghoul Awakens

Season 2 continues the story of Saro, who earned the title Aníkúlápó after gaining the power to resurrect the dead through a mystical gourd stolen by Arolake. The trailer sets a dark and ominous tone with the warning: “Once power is awakened, it demands a price.”

The title The Ghoul Awakens introduces a darker supernatural layer. The Ghoul, a mythical demonic humanoid from Arab folklore, is known for haunting dreams and graveyards, taking deceptive forms to lure people into danger. The trailer strongly suggests that this entity will play a significant role, intensifying the clash between good and evil.

What to Expect in Season 2

Viewers can look forward to:

  • Heightened supernatural activity, including haunted dreams and mysterious disappearances

  • Intensified emotional stakes involving love, loyalty, betrayal, and survival

  • Kingdom-wide power struggles with deeper political consequences

  • Expanded cultural interactions, with hints of Western traders, slavery, and the early stages of colonisation

The trailer also teases new borders and foreign influences, suggesting a more complex geopolitical landscape. While the supernatural remains central, Season 2 appears to balance mystical elements with grounded human conflicts. Every resurrection, every grab for power, carries consequences, raising a compelling question: can immortality ever come without a cost?
