Israel launches ‘broad wave’ of strikes on Tehran after Beirut bombardment
The images emerged after the Iranian capital was hit by intense bombardment overnight and into the morning.
Distinctive smoke plumes can be seen rising over the city as morning light starts to break in the video and photo, which CNN geolocated to central Tehran.
Another photo, from picture agency Getty Images, shows more smoke rising over buildings following explosions in central Tehran Friday morning.
Strikes in Iran: Explosions lit up the sky and smoke engulfed Tehran, while state media reported that a busy shopping street was hit, hours after Israel said it had begun a “broad-scale wave of strikes” there.
• Panic in Beirut: Israel also said it targeted Hezbollah in overnight strikes on the Lebanese capital. Its prior evacuation order raised fears to a new level.
• Iran’s new leader: The three-man council running the country is preparing to introduce a new supreme leader. While US President Donald Trump says he wants a say in the matter, analysts say it’s not that simple.
• Oil crisis: Trump said soaring gas prices in the US do not bother him, even as the war disrupts global energy supplies. The US has given India a 30-day waiver to purchase Russian oil stranded at sea.
